Easy kids recipes – Dalia (broken wheat) porridge -II

This dalia porridge is perfect for all those fussy eaters who would shriek at the sight of dalia.
You can also try out a similar recipe for infants from my other post: http://stay-athome-moms.blogspot.in/2012/03/easy-baby-food-recipes-1.html

This breakfast recipe is enriched with the goodness of milk, coupled with health benefits of the wonderful dalia and toppings you can experiment with to bring in a new taste every time.
Ingredients:
Dalia (broken wheat): 1 cup
Jaggery or honey: 1 tbsp (I avoid sugar to preserve the health component)
Ghee: 1 tsp
Turmeric powder: a pinch
Milk:  2 cups
Grated coconut: 1 tbsp
Crushed almonds: 3
Pinch of cardamom powder
Method:
Heat ghee in a pressure cooker and add the dalia. Roast it till it turns slightly brown. Take precaution not to overheat it else it would burn. Add 2.5 cups of water to it and then close the lid, letting the cooker whistle 3-4 times.
After opening the lid, on seam, add the milk, jaggery or honey, almonds, turmeric and cardamom powder. Bring it to a boil. Sprinkle some fresh coconut over it.You can also use fruits or dry fruits as toppings.
Try a different fruit every time and give it a different and exciting flavour each time.
Health Benefits:
·         Dalia: Low in fat and high in fibre, vitamins and minerals and low fat protein.
·         Jaggery: Rich in iron, protein, minerals and vitamins and it’s also the purest form of sugar.
·         Turmeric powder: Known for its anti-bacterial properties and prevents infection. Relieves heartburn and aids in digestion. It also has powerful anti-oxidant properties. Strengthens the immune system.

Serve it with love and watch your munchkin relish and cherish it!!!
